The supplement is mainly recommended for those consuming a one-sided diet and those with an increased need for folic acid, for example pregnancy and breast-feeding. Folic acid (folate) is a vitamin and is needed to make new cells in the body. The body does not store very much folic acid, thus a regular fresh supply is needed to keep healthy. Pregnant women in particular need a good supply of folic acid which is used by the developing baby. The very early stages of pregnancy are crucial in the need for folic acid. For many years, folic acid was a forgotten vitamin, but the latest studies show that those women who do not receive enough folic acid during pregnancy have a higher chance of giving birth to a baby with birth defects. However, folic acid supplements reduce the risk of having a baby born with a defect of their spinal cord such as spina bifida; it probably also reduces the risk of having a baby born with a cleft lip and palate, and of premature labour. In many countries, this fact has prompted health authorities to recommend those women planning a family to start taking folic acid. For most women the dose is 400 micrograms (0.4 mg) a day for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
However, as nutrition studies have revealed, most women consume less than 200 micrograms of folic acid daily through their diet, meaning that very few women are able to consume the recommended quantity without taking a dietary supplement.
