Carnitine is a substance similar to vitamins, which plays an important role in the body’s energy supply and in the breakdown of fats. It’s role is to bind to the consumed fats and deliver them to the „power plant” of cells, the mitochondrium. It is within the mitochondrium that that the fats are burned, directly being turned into energy.

Our body is able to produce carnitine, yet in very limited amounts. Infants, however, cannot yet produce carnitine, they receive it through breastmilk. Carnitine production begins in the early childhood years and reaches it’s peak around age 17-18. It’s production remains the same until around the age of 40, then rapidly begins to decline;at age 45, production of carnitine practically ceases altogether. This is the major reason that between ages 18-40, we have more energy and not too much fat, while above 40, we become exhausted easily and have to buy a new pant size each year. There is, however, a solution to this problem, as l-carnitine is a good complement to a weight loss diet thanks to it’s fat burning effect.
