French lavender, Lavandula officinalis, is a versatile oil. It’s external application has an antiseptic, sedative, mild pain relieving, and anti-inflammatory effect. When massaged into the skin, it’s essential oil is absorbed relatively quickly by the skin (within 1 hour) and it’s components become detectable within the bloodstream. It is for this reason that it’s positive effects ( a moderation of muscle fatigue) can be felt soon after sports or strenuous physical activity.
Creams containing lavender essential oils used for massages not only have a mild anti-inflammatory and pain relieving effect, but also assist relaxation when inhaled during a massage; this may be especially helpful in the case of crampy and stiff muscles.
